WOW. It's been a while hasn't it? This summer came and went sooooo fast that I could barely keep my feet on the ground. Well, we are getting back to the blog for now with the anticipation of our online GROW store about to open. Just working out a few final kinks. For those of you that have been patient, thanks. Things haven't quite gone as planned but we think we've figured it out and hope it's up within the next few weeks. Now for the first blog in days...

As you all know this blog is mainly focused on succulents and other odd ball plants but every once in a while something else comes along that is more than blog worthy. Here is one of those things. Our friends Gabriel and Maggie are the veggie gurus of our crew and have started up a blog based on their adventures with everything green. From Tomatomania to the craziest Bok Choy, this one will leave you wanting to rip out your succulent garden and get going with the Snap Peas.

Living Stones

Mesembryanthemaceae is a large family of plants that is foreign to many of us. They take on many different alien like forms and are one of the many talking points with new vistors at GROW. Shown above are a few 'living rock' bowls that we have put together recently to show the masses what you can do with these odd plants from South Africa. Because of their specific care needs, many varities are not advisable to mix with other succulents when making succulent bowls. Mesembs are generally much tougher to grow, especially for those that are new to the succulent game, and really only need light waterings in the winter and just enough water in the summer to keep them from shriveling badly in the summer. Well folks, here it is, the find of the month. When digging around at one of my favorite growers some friends and I stumbled across one of the nicest plants I've found in a while. A variegated Aloe Polyphylla. It's in a one gallon pot and is doing beautifully! As much as I want to keep this one for myself, I think this one is hitting the open market. Keep your eyes peeled on eBay over the next few days...

The Hobbit Hacienda

Well all... This is one of the many reasons GROW has been out of touch lately. As I mentioned before we have recently taken on a few really fun projects and The Hobbit Haienda is one. The owners wanted us to come in and help redesign an existing Garden that includes an amazing 50 year old cactus garden that transitions into an area that will soon be a Zen zone. More pics to come.

Stapelia Flower

Above is a photo sent to me by a customer and friend from Bakersfield. It's of a fly that has laid eggs on an amazing Stapelia flower. What happens is the flower's carrion smell attracts flies which often lay eggs on the flower. Sometimes even fly larvae that have hatched from the eggs can be seen on the flower. Nature at its finest.

Wedding gifts

WOW. When my brother told me that some of his carnivorous plants were blooming, I didn't think much of it at first... Then a week went by and he he told me again. After a few more weeks of this he finally said, "When you come by you'd better bring your camera." This is what I found. These photos are of his Sarracenia leucophylla.

If you were to ask me what unusual plant you should buy for the interior of your home, I would probably steer you to the almighty Ficus triangularis. One of my fav's for sure, this rare Ficus native to Malaysia is very hard to come by but when we do... we never pass them up. Grow had two yesterday, now we have one.

STONES AND LACE, FEATHERS AND FLOWERS

I don't usually blog much about art unless it's plant related but in this case I think it's valid. I love STONES AND LACE, FEATHERS AND FLOWERS just as much. I want one.

Motel is pleased to present the work of Philadelphia-based artist Casey Watson. In her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Stones and Lace, Feathers and Flowers, Watson presents a series of 11 agate paintings, accompanied by 4 larger works. Working in ink on paper, Watson's still-lifes bear a cunning simplicity, exhibiting a sophisticated attention to form, texture, light and pattern with a straightforward compositional style. Utilizing the inherent properties of ink, Watson exploits the luminous layering of color and strategic feathering bleeds to convey subtle details, unpredictability and depth. At times, the artist departs from the rigors of objective representation, shifting from source material to imagination, yet still maintains an unquestionable realism.

The Begonia

One plant that is a staple at GROW but gets very little play is the Rex Begonia. Rex begonias are the showboats of the begonia world and are a type of rhizomatous begonia that are grown for their multicolored leaves. The leaves come in every color, pattern and shade, and every size and shape. All Rex Cultorum types are descended from the Indian species B. rex that was crossed with other types of rhizomatous begonias. Rex begonias do bloom but are not grown for their blooms which pale in comparison to their spectacular leaves. GROW is rarely not stocked with ton different types of Begonias to choose from so come by and check'em out.

California Cactus Center recently bought the collection of Woody Minnich, owner of Cactus Data Plants. Woody sold off some of the most incredible plant material in the business and now some of it is on display at the Pasadena showroom of CCC. Stop by to see some amazing plants.

Banksia grandis

Banksia grandis is a member of the Proteaceae family and is a native of Western Australia where the species is found in the south west corner of the State. Bull Banksia is the common name of this large shrub or small tree. The bark is rough and grey in colour. Large leaves are divided into triangular segments. Young growth may be bright red. The cylindrical flower heads are up to 40 centimetres long by 10 centimetres wide. The flowers are greenish-yellow aging to bright yellow. The cones, that follow the flowers, are large, dense and have many follicles (a dry fruit holding two winged seeds). Banksia grandis appreciates well-drained soils in either full sun or dappled shade. The species will tolerate temperatures to about 20 F.

Grow, in conjunction with Gardens by Gabriel, will be putting together a landscape for the Cambria Shores Inn, a long time hideaway on Cambria's Moonstone Drive. Featured in the landscape will be many plants of the Proteaceae including Banksia Grandis.

Also, Grow has been able to aquire some of these rare and unusual plants and has one for sale.

Aloe Polyphylla

Its common name is the Spiral Aloe. The spiraling leaves can either grow clockwise or counterwise (lefty or righty as we like to say). Aloe polyphylla grows in high altitude grassland, between 2000 and 2500 metres - sometimes higher - although apparently only on the more easterly facing slopes at these higher altitudes. This could be due to the cold, where it may be important for the plants to receive early morning sun in winter. The plants are sometimes also under snow in winter. The spiral aloe grows in basalt rock crevices on very steep slopes with loose rock which aids in keeping the plants very well drained. They often grow in the mist and cloud belt in Lesotho. Although soils are well drained, the plants here have a continual flow of water in the summer months. The rainfall is very high and the summers very cool at these high altitudes in Lesotho.

Frost Tolerance: Generally little protection is needed in Phoenix
Minimum Avg. Temperature: 50°F (10°C)
Sun Exposure: Full sun in general, light shade in Phoenix
Origin: Lesotho, on rocky slopes above 7000 feet (2300m)
Growth Habits: Solitary or in large groups, each rosette with 75 to 100 leaves up to 12 inches long (30 cm)
Watering Needs: drought resistant
Propagation: Seed

This is a very rare plant due to its solitary nature. Because of this they are only grown by seed and therefore very hard to get. GROW now has some of these incredible plants for sale.

ISI succulents

For all of you succulent crazed folks out there that don't know the ISI is the plant introduction program of the Huntington, a non-profit organization based out of the world famous Huntington Botanical Gardens in San Marino, Ca. (near Pasadena) Below is a short blurb about them and thier goals. Check the site out for some far out succulents that just might be new to you.

The aim of International Succulent Introductions is to propagate and distribute new or rare succulents to collectors, nurseries and institutions to further research and appreciation of these remarkable plants. Field-collected plants, cuttings or seeds are not sold, only seedlings, grafts and rooted cuttings produced under nursery conditions without detriment to wild populations. Income is used solely to support this program. An annual offering (mail-order only, discontinued each year after September 1) appears in each March-April issue of the Cactus and Succulent Journal and on this website.

Eriosyce

Eriosyce is a genus of much confusion, with many former genus lumped within it. I have collected cacti and succulents for many years and have never encountered a plant tag that read Eriosyce. As with many cacti, old names, new names and wrong names are prevalent, so often one doesn’t really know what they truly have until much hard work and research is done.
I won’t pretend here to be the authority on the subject but merely try and convey some of my findings and hope you as the reader will glean some useful information about the wild world of Eriosyce.
This interesting group of cacti hails from the hot and dry deserts of western South America. As mentioned, Eriosyce is made up of many plants with previous distinctions and names, some include; Chileorebutia, Delaetia, Horridocactus, Islaya, Neochilenia, Neoporteria, Pyrrhocactus, Echinocactus, Rodentiophila, and Thelocephala.
Eriosyce is primarily distinguished by its wooly fruits, which is also where the plant derives its name (greek, erion – wool, syce – fig ) . It also has a unique flower, pollinated by hummingbirds and insects. Other characteristics include fibrous roots that extend from a tap root, heavy spination, in man cases
flattened against the surface, often baring wooly areoles and many species are highly variable which also makes identification more difficult. Another interesting tidbit about Eriosyce is the way in which many of them receive their water. As with much of the coastal Chilean deserts, very little rain finds the desert floor. The plants which inhabit this area survive on seasonal fog and the very, very minimal rainfall which occurs about every tens years or so.
This special group of plants is one to learn about so grab that cacti your not
sure of the name and maybe it becomes your first Eriosyce!

Garden Tools

It's always a challenge when looking for precision garden tools, especially if your not in a big city with specialized garden suppliers. So when a speaker at our cacti & succulent society gave up her online supplier for amazing bonsai shears, my ears perked up. I use my bonsai shears for all kinds of things and in fact, I don't own one true Japanese bonsai. What I do own are many succulent plants that have been worked with as much passion and patience as their bonsai counterparts. Sorry there has been such a gap between blogs. Kara and I just got back from an amazing trip to Oahu with her family and we were without any computer stuff.... thank goodness.

Beyond having an incredible time with family, I actually got a chance to fill my plant needs by visiting a few botanical gardens and the awe inspiring garden of Angel Ramos, a member of the Cactus and Succulent Society of Hawaii and new friend.

Found some really nice garden related things on the Scandinavian Design Center website this weekend and I think you should check it out. The birdbath or 'bird table' as they say, is definitely on my wish list. The plant print is something fun and inexpensive and the planter is out of this world. Check 'em.

After holding out for over a year and a half, GROW finally found a good source for Tillandsias (airplants as they are commonly refered to) and decided to establish an entire section dedicated to the unusual plants that hail from the Southern United States all the way down to South America. As a huge fan of just about anything mid-century, I thought it would be fitting to make our first pottery spot focus on the almighty Architectural Pottery. AP is one of those companies that didn’t slip once. Everything they put out is well designed and on-point. Nowadays, the old original stuff from the 50’s, 60’s is worth more than my car but now Vessel U.S.A. is remaking them in all of their original glory.

Welcome to the Grow Nursery blog. Our plan for this new undertaking is to feature things we like, things were doing and new and exciting finds. We have so much planned for the remainder of this year and throughout next year that I can barely wait!
